Dedication of the George Shively Memorial
Voces Novae is participating in the dedication of the monuments for George Shively and his family members at Rose Hill Cemetery
"George Shively, the Negro League baseball star and Bloomingtonian consigned since 1962 to an unmarked grave at Rose Hill Cemetery, will have a monument marking his final resting place — and that of his wife, their families and other African Americans — dedicated at a 5 p.m. Rose Hill ceremony Easter Sunday.
The outdoor ceremony (weather permitting) is open to the public and features officiating minister Anthony Thompson, with fell...ow former Indiana University football great George Taliaferro, his wife Viola, and Shively family descendants expected to attend. IU professor of music (voice) and Metropolitan Opera lead Timothy Noble and Bloomington's Voces Novae chamber choir will sing.
Shively’s story – which includes seven Negro League All-Star selections and two divisional MVP awards among his baseball honors – began to surface last summer as studies evaluating the Kentucky-born Shively as a Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame candidate dovetailed with research by the Voces Novae choir and member Sally Gaskill." - Andy Graham.
